At Steni Vala we find the first Greek marine park, which is the largest in Europe. The park was created in 1992 to protect the seal Monachus-Monachus and a number of rare animals and plants that live and are fostered here. A visit to the marine park of Alonissos, a cluster of land and water areas, is a special experience for many reasons. First, here is the shelter of the cute seal Monachus-Monachus, a rare species of Mediterranean seal which is threatened with extinction. The majority of the population has found refuge here. To learn more, visit the Information Center for the Protection of the Seal Monachus Monachus that operates in Steni Vala.
You will also have the opportunity to swim in crystal clear waters and take walks in the nearby isles with their churches and the archaeological findings which constitute the marine park. You'll also see rare birds, such as Thalasokorakas (a crow) and Aigaioglaros (a gull), and animals such as the goat of Giouria. Here you will become a lover of photography; there are many things that you will want to capture. The scattered shipwrecks will make you a lover of free diving and, before you know it, you will become as one with this extra virgin site of incredible beauty.
